Final Reflection

During the whole IB course I did many things for my CAS. Firstly it was all just because I had to do it but after some time I had realised that I do really enjoy some of this activities. Taking into consideration Learning Outcomes the first one is Increasing Awareness of Strengths and Areas for Growth. I do not do sports so I decided that this is something that really needs to be improved, also I had problem with keeping my resolutions however I am very stubborn. It was very difficult for me and at the beginning after running I felt like sick person. My body gave me I signs that it does not want to do it but I knew that I have to take care about myself. A lot of time in close space learning required from me some time outdoor for active relax to calm my mind. I had a huge support in this activity and I think that without this I would not make it thus after a month of two I realised that I do really like this and if benefits me a lot. I knew that being stubborn sometimes can lead to something good and also I realised how physical health is important for wellbeing.
Another point is Undertaking New Challenges. This time I took part in Wroclaw Model United Nations Conference as a delegate. It was something big for me because I have a huge problem with public speaking. Nothing is that stressful for me like talking in front of people especially the one that I completely do not know. I thought that I am only going to speak in my Committee in front of 15 or 20 people but then I was assigned to the Security Council and it turned out that I have to give speech in front of all 300 people gathered there. I was so scared that I wanted to resign from thin conference. However I decided that if is very important to conquer my fears and I had to face it. I did a huge step in my life and I believe that a year or two ago I would not be able to do this.
Into planned and initiated activities that I did I can assign the Ski competition that I took part in. It was an event that needed to be organised before and then managed very well. It can be said that I was the logistic part of this event, because I had to take care about all the participants and how everything will be planned there. I did it together with my friend. This event has learnt me effective working in stress. It used to be like this that stress was crippling for me and I was not able to do anything. After thin event I realised that in work there is no time for states like this and I need to do my job right, as it is required. Also planning such events is really exciting. I was very happy that my friends and me were able to be part of such an event but I was also afraid that something might go wrong. Being one of the organisers is huge responsibility.
During the Social experiment that I had conducted with my friends in our school Working Collaboratively with Others could be seen. We were doing all this together with my classmate. Group work is kind of ability that is very helpful in the adult life, because there probably be a lot of situations in my life, in my job that I would have to work with others on a project. This collaboration was an easy one, because I did it with a good friend however I experienced also some problems connected with different views and our individualism. I believe that there should be a lot of group projects in high school in order to prepare students for future work in collages or with their co-workers.
My Perseverance and Commitment could be seen in an action organised in my area called “Cleaning the world”. I was engaged in cleaning in the forest that is on my estate and the whole closest area. This was a few hours of hard job, because the forest was full of garbage and everything looked disgusting. I was tired and had enough of all this rubbish but I new that we, the residents of this area, are not going to do something with this nobody do.  It was a matter of all of us and I knew that this was not a time and place for giving up. Sometimes we have to work for the public weal and not consider only our own needs.
I was also Engaged in the Issues of Global Importance by being a part of annually action in my country called WOŚP. I was a voluntary there every year since I was 8 years old so I also did it twice during the IB course. I believe that we should not be blind to all the hurt that is around us and I think that we should help in the way we can. This year money was collected for deserving life for old people. I thing that this is a global problem that old people usually are threated as worthless or are forgotten by their families. It might be because of the fast style of living that mainly people have today. I think that sometimes we should stop and think about our closest people, because they will not live forever.
I had Consider the Ethical Implications of my Actions during this what I did for last Christmas. I took a few thermoses with borsch and was giving a cup of it to homeless people that had nothing during this day that should be spent with family. Homeless people do not have anyone with them so this day it rather sad for them. I was trying to talk to those people and listen to their stories. This action realized me that it is not ethical to judge people by their appearance because they could experience a tragedy in their lives and be not directly responsible for their current state. Also I believe that alcoholism is illness like any other and a person is not able to conquer it without sufficient support.
Developing New skills was the greatest part of whole CAS. Some actions that I did were not for me some turned out to be something I do really like. One of it was cooking. I am a huge fan of Jamaican culture so to closer to it I decided to try their cousin. I hate cooking and I do not do it right, but it is an ability that will be very helpful in my adult life so I decided to learn it. First trials are always bad, but during IB course I have learnt that I can quit quickly and I have to practice everything to perfection, so also in this case it seems to be that cooking is not that bad thing and the more I practice the better I am.

During CAS through whole IB course I realized many things and did learn a lot about my self. I gained huge experience and many skills that will be helpful for my adult life, but what is more important I am aware of the fact that hobbies and passion is necessary in life. As an adult I cannot focus only on my work, but I must remember about active relax and spending the free time in a productive way. Also now I am better prepared for working with other people, which is a vital ability helpful not only in my future work but also in building a relationship and then family. I am vey proud of myself, because this course made to conquer my biggest fears like public speaking and gave me an opportunity to develop.

Treasurer

This year I was also a class treasurer and I think that this time it was a harder job. During this year there were a lot of events that needed huge amount of cash like our prom and again I was the person responsible for collecting all the money and delivering them to right people. It was a difficult task for me but I think that I did a great job and now I can be treated as a person that is trustworthy and responsible. This was the last year of my untroubled life in high school and now the life of an adult is starting. I think that this job has learnt me a lot and gave me an opportunity to improve or even develop skills that will be very helpful in the adult life. Because I want to move from my home city a go to university that is far away of my parents I need to be able to manage my resources and to do it wisely because I will have limited allowance and I will not get any more for treats. I think that through these three years of being a treasurer in my class I have learnt a lot and this job has given me an opportunity to develop skills that will be very helpful for me now. I think that this was really good idea to undertake this challenge and face the responsibilities that were connected with it. I am proud of my self that I took all I could from this opportunity.

Learning Outcomes:
  1. Increased awareness of strengths and areas for growth.
  2. Shown perseverance and commitment
  3. Considered the ethical implication
  4. Planned and initiated activities

Private Lessons

I believe in reciprocal help. Because of this I decided to help my friend in the preparation for his final exams from the Computer Science classes. I think that I’m quite good from these classes. So it was nothing challenging for me to give some of my time to help a friend. Also I think that by explaining something I was able to strengthen my current knowledge. Somebody said that if you are not able to explain something in the easy way it means that in fact you do not understand this and I strongly believe in those words. Time spent with my friend has shown to me at what level is my knowledge from this subject indeed.

I experienced a lot of help from other students from my class and I thing that this is the trait of true IB student and the only way to survive this program properly. Working with others and sharing our knowledge and skills is very important and brings a lot of profit for both sides of this agreement. Also this is something that may ease the future, adult life.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Increase awareness of your strengths and areas for growth.
  • Plan and initiate activities.
  • Work collaboratively with others.
  • Show perseverance and commitment.

Titanic Museum

Last weekend I was in the capital city of Poland – Warsaw. I spent there the whole weekend sightseeing and relaxing before final exams. I do really like this city and I plan to go there to university so I enjoy this time very much. One of the places that I visited was the Titanic exhibition in the Palace of Culture and Science. This was a part-time exhibition, which had been only available in the USA and not a long time ago it has started to emerge in Europe. I do really like museums and historical exhibitions like this, because I believe that people are able to get a lot of knowledge out of these events. It was said that the man who does not know the history is doomed to repeat it. I am certain that it is true.Titanic used to be the greatest, swimming hotel in the world. The first cruise was April 10th 1912 and the catastrophe has occurred 4 days later when the ship has crushed into the iceberg and drowned together with 1495 passengers and staff. I was surprised that about half of them managed to be saved. After watching the movie I thought that this event had way bigger scale and it only some individuals survived. During this exhibition I was able to see the real equipment that was on the Titanic and some objects that belonged to the passengers e.g. their letters, postcards, rings etc. I do really enjoy things like this and I really like sightseeing, because I can personate as somebody from those times and feel like part of “that world”. Also possibility of seeing the objects works better for imagination. I think that time spent in the museums is an option for creative relax and productive free time.

Learning Outcomes:
  • Engage with issues of global importance.
  • Consider ethical implications.

Jamaican Food

I am a huge fan of Jamaican culture. I love the way how people there live, their food, their philosophy of life, music, language and their country generally speaking. I am learning the Jamaican language which actually is called patois ( it is pronounced: patwa). It is a speaking language so I watch a lot of videos of people speaking like this and listen to reggae songs where Rastafarai speak with this accent. In order to go deeper into this culture I decided to go familiar with Theo cuisine and make a dish that is commonly eaten in Jamaica. But let me introduce you a bit into the concepts of their believes. Rastafarai, which are the majority of Jamaican population believe that their body is a temple. That take care about it for example by not eating process food, red meat and not using any addictive substances. Therefore I think that the stereotype of Rastafarai might be a bit unfair. Jamaica is a land of fresh fruits, vegetables and intensive spices so the dish that I decided to make tastes exactly like this.
Recipe: 1. 0.6-0.8kg of sweet potatoes 2. 3 glasses of coconut milk 3. Half spoon of cinnamon 4. Half spoon of ginger 5. Half spoon of nutmeg 6. 1 and half spoon of vanilla 7. Quarter of glass of brown sugar 8. 2 glasses of soaked raisins 9. Half of glass of flour 10. 0.2 kg of carrot or beetroot Procedures: 1. Blend potatoes and milk 2. Dice carrot or beetroot 3. Mix all ingredients in a bowl 4. Put it into a greased baking tray 5. Bake firstly for 1,5h at 180 C and then 25 minutes at 150 C 6. Immediately put out of the oven 7. Eat after 5h or the best on next day Activities like this are particularly challenging for me. As I stated previously I hate cooking and I can't do it very well. I am aware of this that this is important ability in my future independent life and I try to develop it because I need it. But actually it was a great fun and the final outcome was satisfying for me. I think maybe someday I might like it.

Cycling

The weather becomes better and better. I finally start to feel that the spring is coming. I think that my organism needed it and I plan to get as much as I can from every sunbeam that appears. Now I have a lot of work because final exams are very close and I spend a lot of time in the house learning. I believe that it is not good. Learning becomes less effective when there are no sufficient breakers made. So I decided to do sainting with it. Through the the recent break I started the cycling season. I do really enjoy riding a bike because in this time I can think about my life, some current events and listen to music which I love. Music is my life and lately I had no time to enjoy it so cycling allows me for this. Because of all the important decisions in my life I have some sleeping issues. This morning I decided not to wast my time and do something useful for my body and my mind so I took a morning trip. I was amazing because I could heat the birds in the morning singing and feel the fresh air in the forest. I was really great. And after I came back home I was full of energy and ready for effective learning. I believe that it is important to keep the learning hygiene and do not overdo. Our body has some limits and it is important to take care about it. We cannot put anything in our lives over physical and mental health.

30 days challenge

I've just started 30 day squat challenge. I was inspired to do this by a Matt Cutts' lecture. He is a computer science specialist. He said that firstly you have to state what you always wanted to do. Then just do it. Only for 30 days. It is not for very long so even me with terrible (not) strong will is able to do it.
Matt did photo every day and he was surprised that the remembers each moment clearly. He did not eat sugar for those 30 day. However in the 31st day he had eaten tones of sugar. For 30 day he has written a book, it was not good but it was his dream. For 30 day he had been cycling to work and he still does. Now he is more self-confident and from a guy they was only sitting by his desk he has changed into a person that is cycling to work for his pleasure. And after a few 30 days sessions he had climbed on Mount Kilimanjaro. The highest mountain in Africa. Matt said that there is nothing to loos because this 30 days would pass anyway, so why we should not try something that we always wanted to do, to change in our life. I believe that this challenge is not about doing those things that we will plan, but it is about breaking the routine in our lifes and realising that we are able to do whatever we want, because we state our borders and capabilities and that is something what should always be in our mind. This challenge is very important for me because I do not want it to be a flash in the pan (as usually) but a step to change my life and I believe that this time I will be able to engage in this action and do not resign when first obstacles will occur.

Here is Matt's presentation.

Go Vegan!

I've started new activity in my life. I hate cooking but because I'm becoming older and older and I would have to be an independent adult when I go to collage I decided that this is something that I need to be able to do. I have started to explore the world of vegan cuisine, because it is healthy and suitable for my allergic problems. I'm not saying that I went totally vegan, but I thought they it would be nice to implement a few recipes like this to my diet. I wanted to start with something quite easy so I decided to do vegan chocolate and bean cookies. Here is the recipe:

  • 1 and 1/2 cup of red bean
  • 3 and 1/2 spoons of peanut butter
  • 3 spoons of cocoa
  • 4 spoons of grinded Xylitol
  • 1 spoon of flax meal
  • 1 teespoon of glutenfree baking powder
  • 1/4 cup of water or vegetable milk
  • toppings: almonds, cashews, vegan chocolate

I did a lot of them so I was able to treat my family with those sweets. Surprisingly they really like them and do did I. There is a saying on all vegan forums that vegan sweets does not fatten. It might be funny but in fact a bit true, because for example in this recipe there is no sugar added. Vegas cuisine is very healthy for the organism if substitute all the products that are forbidden to use on a right way. My sister, which inspired me to implement a bit of vegan cuisine in my life, is on this kind of diet for over two months right now and the examinations that she recently has went very good, much better that it used to be. In this way I decide to take care about my health and change my eating habits a bit in order to deliver to my organism important vitamins, minerals and others and also to remove sugar and and other not healthy substances entirely from my life.
Tasts great with coffee
